Rapa Nui

Exploring and Mapping Its Ancient Villages

This will be one of the most unique and significant courses Ancient Explorations has ever offered. In addition to visiting and learning about the amazing moai statues of Rapa Nui, course participants will assist a professional survey crew in mapping the island's ancient villages. Despite decades of archaeology on the island, the focus has been almost exclusively on its megalithic monuments. This will be the first ever project to completely map the island's residential sectors.

RanoRaraku
Participants need not worry that they'd be joining a chain gang - this mapping effort will employ cutting edge technology - survey drones and liDAR. A professional crew from Tukuh Technologies will be doing the survey and course participants will assist with setting drone targets and taking geo-located photos of ancient house foundations, garden plots and earthen ovens. The map is being made as a gift for and with the permission of Ma'u Henua, the indigenous association who regained authority over their ancestral lands in 2017.

RanoKau
There will also be ample time to visit the many moai statues of the island. Each day will be a combination of assisting the mapping crew and touring the various locations of moai. The Rano Raraku quarry, where 95% of the 887 moai were carved, the Rano Kau crater and the Roiho Caves near Ahu Tepeu will also be explored. Evening lectures will further explain the history of Rapa Nui and what we understand of their astronomical knowledge.

Anakena
Rapa Nui is in the middle of nowhere! It's more than 1000 miles away even to the nearest other island. As such, participants will fly first to Santiago, Chile and then from there another 5 hour flight to Rapa Nui. The group will gather in Santiago the night before that flight to go together as a group. And remember, it will be winter in the southern hemisphere. Bring your jacket!

For people with an interest in...

History, archaeology, anthropology, astronomy, mythology, sociology, and other related science and social sciences fields.

Prerequisites

While not required, participants are encouraged to have at least some knowledge of the history of Rapa Nui. Dr. Ed Barnhart can recommend readings for those interested in learning more before the trip. Day trips will involve hiking in cool and windy weather. While it will not be physically challenging, participants in weak physical condition are encouraged to build strength and stamina before the trip.

Costs
$2800 per person (double room lodging)
Add $600 for single room lodging supplement
Flights
Participants are responsible for arranging their own flight reservations to and from Santiago and onward to Rapa Nui - still called Easter Island by Latam Airlines, the only airline who flies there. Since participants come from all over the country, recommending a single flight is impossible. As of October 2018, round trip flights from Miami to Santiago are running about $750 on average, but flights from places like New York or Houston are about $1200. Then the flight to Rapa Nui from Santiago will be another $500-600. Of course, the airline industry is dependent on the market and fees are subject to change. Hopefully posted prices will reduce at the start of 2019.
