Expedition to Machu Picchu

Including Lima, Cuzco, and the Sacred Valley

This tour is designed as a family friendly experience, good for all ages and education levels. Participants will fly into Lima, Peru late the first night and transport to their hotel. The next day will be spent in Lima, visiting the Larco Herrera Museum and a a massive pyramid complex located in the middle of downtown Lima. Day three will start with a flight up to Cuzco at 11,500 ft asl. There, the group will acclimatize for two days as they learn about how Cuzco was the capital of the Inca Empire and explore its ancient temples.

On March 20, the group will board a train headed through the Sacred Valley for Machu Picchu. Arriving by before noon, they'll check into their hotels and spend the rest of the day on a tour of the ruins with Dr. Barnhart. The next day they will return to the ruins at dawn to watch the equinox sun rise and then climb the mountain behind the temples - Wayna Picchu (optional). Early the next morning they'll get on the train again, this time headed to Ollataytambo, an Inca Fortress in the Sacred Valley. Transfering to a bus, they'll spend the day exploring the Sacred Valley, eating lunch along the Urubamba River and meeting friendly alpacas at the Awana Kancha Weaving Co-op. On the final day of the tour the group will fly back down to Lima, tour its colonial city center, and return to the Lima airport for midnight flights home to the USA.



Prerequisites

While not required, participants are encouraged to have at least some knowledge of the history of the ancient Inca. Dr. Ed Barnhart can recommend readings for those interested in learning more before the trip. Some day trips will involve hiking around in high altitude and cool weather. Remember, it will be fall in Peru! While most of the trip will not be physically challenging (and the parts that will be are optional), participants in weak physical condition are encouraged to build strength and stamina before the trip.



Costs
$2500 per person for triple room lodging
$2800 per person for double room lodging
$3200 per person for single room lodging
Flights
Participants will be responsible for booking their own round trip flights to Lima and Cuzco. Dr. Barnhart will advise on which flights to purchase.
Hotels During the Course
Hotel Miraflores Colon in Lima, Hotel Ruinas in Cuzco and the El Santuario in Machu Picchu Town
Included
All lodging, private ground transportation, breakfasts, all entry fees, professional guides at archaeological sites, and evening lectures.
Not Included
Flights to Lima and Cuzco, lunches, dinners, and gratutities for service providers (waiters, drivers, maids, guides).
How to register for the tour

Registration will remain open until December 21st, but the tour is limited to 20 participants. To confirm your place, send your deposit, fill out the registration form (PDF) and email it to Ancient Explorations at edbarnhart@ancientexploration.com.

A $500/person deposit to Ancient Explorations is required at registration.
Balance payments will be due 60 days before the tour (January 16, 2019).
